SPOTLIGHT SATURDAY: Rosemica Calixte
Rosemica “Mica” Calixte is the founder of H A I R B Y M I C A, located in Roselle Park, NJ. Rosemica was born in Manhattan, NY, but raised in Irvington, NJ.
After graduating from middle school, Rosemica decided to attend a vocational school instead of her district high school. She enlisted into North 13 Vocational Tech with the intent of becoming a medical practitioner, but as time passed she began to fall in love with cosmetology. By the age of seventeen she was a working licensed cosmetologist.
Her plan was to use cosmetology as a means to get through college. She received her Bachelor’s in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University. During her four years in college, Rosemica built a solid clientele. Towards the end of her college career she questioned if she was ready to leave cosmetology behind. After deliberating her options, her plans changed.
She decided to continue working within the field of cosmetology while having her Psychology degree to be used as backup. No matter what path she took in life, she knew she wanted to be her own boss.
“The dream of working for myself pushed me to open my own hair salon right after graduating from Rutgers University. My journey was not easy, but it was possible because I kept pushing myself to be the best I can be.”

Catering to the natural hair community
Mica explains: "When I say “natural” I am referring to the clients who do not chemically straighten their hair. Many hair salons today encourage women of color to get relaxers only because they are unable to handle ethnic hair, but we are different. At H A I R B Y M I C A our staff is well-rounded and can work with all types of hair in order to render the client’s desired style."

“My business started with a dream that I chose to speak into existence. I was uncomfortable at each salon I worked for and that feeling pushed me to create a place of my own where I can provide others with the atmosphere I was once looking for.”

Mica explains: “When I sit back and think about life, I realized that He was there all along pushing me. He never allowed me to become too comfortable because he knew what he was preparing me for. Other than God I have been blessed with an amazing family who instilled great qualities and values within me.”

Her favorite pastime includes catching up on hair shows or reading about new techniques that she can adopt at her salon.

Mica explains: “I did not allow my environment to dictate what I would become. I am a living representation of endless possibilities.”
